I may never get around to writing a full report on the May Superbowl of Poker but the long and short of it is that I didn’t take home any money. Out of a starting pool of 36 players I went out in 12th on a hand that went a little something like this:
AJo in middle position. Folded to me, I bet $500. I get one caller and we go heads-up on a flop of KTx. I like my odds here heads-up with an overcard and a straight possible. Besides I put him on a pocket pair but not the trip Kings so I’m not even worried about the K. I go all in thinking he’ll fold his low pair. He calls and flips up QQ and the turn and river bring me no relief. Blah!
The night was full of firsts: We had our biggest turnout yet with 36 players. We also had our first female player, Christina who stuck it out and made it to the last two tables. Total prize money was over $2400 this tourney with payouts to the top 4 players.
The game came down to Brandon and Neal who seemed to drag the game out forever in a marathon heads-up match. Brandon had almost busted out earlier in the evening but ended up with a split pot. He thought he had lost and was ready to leave but they called him back to the table and he battled it out to become the chip leader with a massive chip advantage over Neal at the final table. I think Brandon’s downfall was that he didn’t change up his game playing heads-up. He seemed to be playing pretty tight hoping to use his chip lead to wear Neal down but Neal was taking down pot after pot and by the time the blinds got up to the $3200/$6400 range you can’t really afford to let someone steal the blinds on you.
I guess if it makes me feel better about not winning, Neal just won an online entry into the WSOP so he’ll be in Vegas soon playing with the big boys. That may just be worth a trip out to Sin City to watch.
